Author and historian to speak at Callahan Depot Thursday

West Nassau Historical Society Press Release

POSTED 10/22/2008 - Author and historian William Ryan will be the guest speaker at the general meeting of the West Nassau Historical Society this Thursday, October 23rd, at the historic Callahan Depot.

The gathering is open to the public and will begin at 7 PM with a pot luck dinner followed by Mr. Ryan.

Ryan is webmaster for the Flagler County Public Library's Flagler Memories group and is active in several Flagler County historical societies. He also penned two books about Old Florida and the historic King's Road which still runs through western Nassau County today.

The King's Road, Florida's first highway, began from St Augustine in about 1765 and ran Northward through what would later become Callahan and Hilliard before it reached Colerain, Georgia, on the St. Mary's River. The road was constructed by British engineers to connect the new British colony of Florida with Georgia and followed the established trails of indigenous people.

After Ryan speaks, there will be a brief meeting of the Historical Society that is also open to the public. The not for profit group will discuss the upcoming open house at the Depot on November 15th and the Christmas gathering on December 6th.

The public is invited to attend this Thursday's meeting and to join the Society in discussing the rich diverse history of western Nassau County. For more information, contact John Hendricks at 904-879-3406.
