Entertainment & More

Atlanta
By DAVID THEUS

David Theus

Over the past several months I have been approached by many of you wandering where my articles have gone from the unnamed paper for which I used to write. If you enjoyed it in the past, there is a good chance you will enjoy reading more.

Ego check, let’s be real for a moment, before my head gets too big, here’s the deal. I’m going to start the column we called Entertainment & More again and it will be located here in our "Events" section, if you like it, we will keep doing it, if not, we’ll stop. Either way I would love your feedback. -- Dave

The Varsity
Atlanta…a big city of fun!

It’s been some time since we have taken one of our weekend get-a-ways, but this past weekend, Sheila surprised Sarah and me with a quick trip to Atlanta. Sheila decided to purchase tickets to what turned out to be the closest tour stop of the Superstars of Gymnastic Tour.

It was perfect, we got up early Friday morning (teacher planning day for schools) and loaded up an overnight bag for Atlanta. On the way up I called the perfect location to stay. The downtown Marriott Hotel is just blocks away from Centennial Park, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Phillips Arena where the event was held. We got to Atlanta early enough to take in a nap and just hang out from the nearly six hour road trip.

After our naps, it was time to reveal a surprise of my own. The show doors didn’t open until 6:30 pm, so we had about an hour or so to kill before the show. We jumped in the car and drove about a mile down the road to the worlds largest drive through, better known as The Varsity for dinner. I explained to Sarah the very first time I had ever been to The Varsity was when I was nine years old.

The last time I had been back was when I was sixteen years old, some twenty-nine years ago. Back then the men working behind the counter would sing and or shout your order to the back where they were making the hot dogs. Now, sadly with the use of computers, the computer prints out into the kitchen and the feeble shout is just for show, not quite the old days. There’s an example where modern efficiencies have taken from the cool experiences of the past. It turns out it is still the main source of food for Georgia Tech students and visitors to downtown Atlanta.

Time for the show. Sheila had done a great job securing seats just off the floor and dead center

KSM
of the arena where all of the gymnasts’ performed right toward us all night. We got to see the 2008 Men’s Bronze Medal team and several alumni gymnasts’ like Shannon Miller, 2004 Olympic Men’s Gymnastics Team Silver Medalist - Blaine Wilson, the Hamm brothers, and two Disney music performers, all girl band KSM and Jordan Pruitt. Oh yeah, I almost forgot, gold medalist - Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin too. It was a great show, those guys and gals can really move.

Saturday morning was full of adventure too - read my  story about the Georgia Aquarium in our Travel section this week. What a place!
