The Georgia Aquarium
Two Words
Two Words…Whale Shark! If you haven’t been, you need to go! If you’ve been before, plan to go again and take a few friends to enjoy the visit. The Georgia Aquarium is located in the heart of Atlanta adjacent to Centennial Park, The Phillips Arena, and CNN’s Headquarters - all walking distance from one another. I had the opportunity to visit Atlanta recently and take in this great learning experience. I love it when learning is fun! The aquarium is an attraction you can fit into a morning, mid-day, or afternoon excursion. It should not take you all day, but if you wanted to, it would not be such a bad thing at all. When you finally come out of Centennial Park and get your first glimpse of the building, your first thought is how did they get this hulking ship all the way into the center of Atlanta. The Architecture is truly breathtaking in design. I know what you are thinking, it’s just a bunch of fish in a big tank, what’s the big deal? I have been to Sea World in Orlando too many times to count, I’ve been to the aquarium in Chicago, a beautiful display, but not the same, and lastly I’ve been to Marineland as well. For what ever reason, this experience is definitely different and more impressive. I think I have narrowed it down to two words... Whale Shark!
Maybe the reason these Whale Sharks are so impressive is because hardly anyone has ever seen one before in the wild, and unless you have been to one of only four places in the world that have them in captivity, the first time is breathtaking. In case you were thinking about visiting the other three locations that have a Whale Shark, that would be the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, or the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Japan, and in the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai U.A.E. So save your money and travel time and go to the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, they have two males and two females for your viewing pleasure. I don’t want to take anything away from the rest of the exhibits located at the aquarium, each of them interesting and entertaining in their own right. They have a Cold Water Quest which displays the wildlife found in the coldest of the world’s waters including a Beluga Whale and Penguin exhibit. There is an exhibit called the Georgia Explorer depicting the water life of Georgia’s coastal water ways, the Ocean Voyager (the big tank), River Scout, and finally an area dedicated to the life on the ocean’s reefs called Tropical Diver. Be sure to check out their web site for information about ticket prices, hours of operation, and any special upcoming events or traveling exhibits that might be stopping in at the aquarium. When we were there the Titanic exhibit was featured. www.georgiaaquarium.org One last special treat. Check out this link, this is one of many live webcams the aquarium has so those at home may sample a little before they come to see how spectacular it really is. http://www.georgiaaquarium.org/exploreTheAquarium/webcam-ocean-voyager.aspx |
