Crime Down in Fernandina Beach

Crime Down in Fernandina Beach

The Fernandina Beach Police Department is pleased to have experienced an impressive 16.6 percent reduction in serious crime says Chief of Police James T. Hurley. He noted most crime categories saw reductions compared to the first six months of 2007 according to the Semi-Annual 2008 Uniform Crime Report recently released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Specifically, the 2008 report highlights zero incidents of homicide or forcible sex offenses between January and June, 25 percent fewer aggravated assaults and 35.1 percent fewer burglaries. Incidents of robbery increased from seven to ten, while larceny crimes saw a 2.9 percent reduction.

The largest single increase occurred with crimes classified as larceny from motor vehicles, from thirty to sixty total incidents. Residents are reminded to keep valuables out of sight and to remove them from vehicles when practical. Most importantly, residents should keep unattended vehicles locked at all times
