Rowing takes home six medals at The Head of the Hooch Rowing takes home six medals at The Head of the HoochThe JU rowing teams are off to a fast start in 2008-09 as the Dolphins took home six medals at The Head of the Hooch, Saturday on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga, Tenn. JU, which has tallied 10 medals in two fall races thus far, had each of its men’s boat medal in every event they competed in. In a tough women’s competition, the Women’s Championship 4 placed 10th out of 28 boats to lead the Dolphins.
Among the medals were gold by the Men’s Lightweight 8, Men’s Freshman 4 and Men’s Freshman 8. The Men’s Championship 8 and Men’s Championship 4 "A" took home a silver and the Men’s Lightweight 4 rounded things out with a bronze. "We are very pleased with the results on the men’s side and to medal in every event is really big for this competition," said JU director of rowing and men’s head coach Jim Mitchell. "As a program, it’s the best we’ve ever done and with these good times, we have good hopes for the spring." "This weekend was a good learning experience for our women to race against Top 20 Division I programs" said JU women’s head coach Anna Talucci. "The goal now is to assess our performance, make the changes and improvements we need, so we can start to narrow that margin for the spring." The Men’s Lightweight 8 with coxswain Anthony Magro, Rich O’Neill, Stefan Negaard, Joey Civello, Kevin Friedlander, Wayne Reichard, Parker Lawler, John Gerety and Chris Barse placed first with a mark of 16:07.0 ahead of Georgia Tech "A" (16:09.6), UNC "A" (16:12.1) and Ohio State "A" (16:59.2). The Men’s Freshman 4 with coxswain Andrew Soloway, Andy Davis, Isaiah LaCount, Isaac LaCount and Chris Ottie took first with a time of 17:34.6 ahead of Texas "A" (18:37.5), Texas "B" (18:45.3), Clemson (19:00.6), Xavier "B" (20:45.5), Tennessee "A" (21:44.1), College of
The Men’s Freshman 8 with coxswain Tom Richards, Andy Davis, Chris Ottie, Isaac LaCount, Isaiah LaCount, Tucker Smoot, Jordan Bewley, Wayne Reichard and Parker Lawler took home gold with a mark of 16:57.1 ahead of Texas "A" (17:54.9), Cincinnati (18:32.5), UNC "A" (19:31.2) and Georgia Tech (19:53.2). The Men’s Championship 8 with coxswain Dan Moore, Dylan Kosten, Richmond Jones, Erich Negaard, Sebastian Kuhn, Tyler Humphrey, Bradley Woodrum, Joey Civello and Stefan Negaard finished second with a time of 15:30.4 behind Texas "A" (15:26.6). The squad finished ahead of Georgia Tech "A" (15:31.0), Emory "A" (15:40.5), UNC "A" (15:53.5), Florida "A" (16:03.5), Ohio State "A" (16:04.2), Georgia Tech "B" (16:08.8), Clemson "A" (16:22.2), Rollins College "A" (16:49.3), Murray State "A" (17:12.6) and Emory "B" (18:07.9). The Men’s Championship 4 "A" consisting of coxswain Dan Moore, Dylan Kosten, Sebastian Kuhn, Tyler Humphrey and Richmond Jones took second with a time of 17:18.5 behind Emory "A" (17:07.7). The squad placed ahead of Texas "A" (17:27.6), Georgia Tech "A" (17:40.3), Texas "B" (17:40.6), UNC "A" (17:43.4), Florida "A" (17:50.3), Ohio State "A" (17:56.9), Rollins College "A" (18:11.3), Clemson "A" (18:11.8) and Emory "B" (18:13.0). The Men’s Championship 4 "B" with coxswain Andrew Soloway, Erich Negaard, Bradley Woodrum, Dan Hutchinson and Kevin Friedlander placed 12th in the race but finished ahead of UCF "A" (18:22.2), Georgia Tech "B" (18:55.3), Murray State "B" (20:37.9) and St. Louis "A" (20:42.9). The Men’s Lightweight 4 consisting of coxswain Rich O’Neill, Kevin Friedlander, John Gerety and Chris Barse finished third with a time of 17:33.5 behind Upper Arlington "A" (17:17.8) and Stetson (17:31.8). The squad finished ahead of Emory "A" (17:34.0), Texas "A" (17:34.5), Tennessee "A" (17:45.6), Georgia Tech "A" (17:48.4), Clemson "A" (17:51.7), Clemson "B" (17:57.9), Virginia Tech "A" (18:05.8), Ohio State "A" (18:12.0), Georgia Tech "B" (18:14.5), Miami "A" (18:36.2), UCF "A" (18:45.7), Georgia "A" (18:47.4), Auburn "A" (18:54.7), Georgia State "A" (18:57.3), Upper Arlington "B" (19:08.8) and Cincinnati "A" (19:17.0). The Women’s Championship 4 "A" with coxswain R. Maria Sotelo, Stephanie Bechtold, Adelina Anderson, Jenna Barker and Danielle Fournier placed 10th out of 28 boats with a mark of 19:06.5) but finished ahead of Duke "A" (19:07.6), Clemson "C" (19:14.6), Alabama "B" (19:20.7), Texas "B" (19:23.5), Alabama "A" (19:39.1), Texas "A" (19:42.2), UNC "C" (19:52.1), UNC "B" (19:53.6), Texas "D" (19:58.6), Oklahoma "A" (20:12.9), Louisville "C" (20:21.9), Emory "A" (20:25.8), Rollins College "A" (20:48.1) and UNC "D" (20:50.1). The Women’s Championship 4 "B" with coxswain Jamie Goldstein, Kelly Burke, Karly Greer, Julia Fairchild and Elise Perna placed 26th in the event with a time of 21:03.3. The Women’s Championship 8 with coxswain R. Maria Sotelo, Jill Carmody, Karly Greer, Kelly Burke, Morgan McTiernan, Julia Fairchild, Caitlin Halloran, Candace Barber and Allison Sobiech placed 24th out of 26 boats with a mark of 18:50.8.
