Lady Ospreys to hold open tryouts

The women's tennis team has one roster spot open

JACKSONVILLE, FL - In preparation for its 2009 season, the University of North Florida women’s tennis team will host open tryouts, which will begin with an informational meeting on Nov. 13, at the UNF Tennis Complex at 7 a.m.

"We have a pretty strong team, but we have one more roster spot to fill," said UNF head coach Rodrigo Puebla. "Several positions are up for grabs, and the new addition to the team will have the opportunity to compete for one of those spots."

After the Nov. 13 meeting, the tryouts will be held one week later on Nov. 20. During the seven-day span, all those who wish to tryout will need to have a physical examination. Information about the physical and additional tryout information will be given at the initial meeting.

The Lady Ospreys finished their fall schedule in good form, going 6-1 on the first day of the UNF Invitational, including singles and doubles wins by all members of the team. In the fall season opener, sophomore Lauren Holton led UNF with a third place finish in the B1 singles bracket while freshman Aline Berkenbrock tallied a 3-1 record and seventh place finish in the A1 singles bracket.

The team’s lone senior Ina Durcakova also competed in the A1 singles bracket and gave the Lady Ospreys another 3-1 bracket record, placing ninth.

"We faced some tough competition that really challenged us," UNF head coach Rodrigo said. "But at the same time, we were able to compete and build confidence."

UNF opens its season at Georgia Southern on Jan. 31 before returning home for a three-match homestand against Missouri-Kansas City (Feb. 6), Florida A&M (Feb. 8) and Troy (Feb. 14).
