Clay voters chose Wortham for superintendent

Clay voters chose Wortham for superintendent

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, FL - In what election officials say was one of the largest turnouts for Clay County voters, Ben Wortham was chosen as the new superintendent of schools over Stephen Richards. Incumbent David Owens did not seek re-election.

Wortham received 63,601 votes easily outdistancing Richards with 20,959.

In the County Commission District 3 race, Travis Cummings carried 9,191 votes to opponent Ron Raymond’s 3,630.

A Clay County Charter amendment that would reduce the number of commissioners from seven to five was leading with 78 percent of the vote. Just two years ago voters approved a charter amendment to add two more seats making one a chairman. Another amendment cutting commissioners pay also was passed by voters.

Voters also okayed a straw poll asking if alcohol sales should be allowed to start at noon on Sundays.
