Columbia chooses new sheriff

LAKE CITY, FL - Challenger Mark Hunter took a 54.2 percent majority of the vote to oust incumbent Bill Cootee and become the next sheriff of Columbia County. Hunter received 14,933 votes to Bill Gootee’s 12,610 votes or about 45.7 percent of the 27,543 votes cast in Tuesday election. He will take office in January.

In the County Commissioner District 3 race, Jody DuPree won with 52.5 percent of the vote (3,296 votes) over David N. Rountree, who had 2,975 votes (47.4 percent). He will be sworn in on November 18.

Scarlet Parnell Frisina defeated Garry Wayne Ward Sr. for the District 5 commission seat. Frisina got 3,011 votes or about 54.2 percent over Ward’s 2,536 votes (45.7 percent).

Jake Hill Jr. was elected as the newest Lake City Councilman, representing District 12. Hill garnered 779 votes, 60.2 percent, over opponent Greg Ridilla, who had 513 votes or 39.7 percent.
