The board is acting on an April 2007 recommendation by Forrest's School Advisory Council to rename the school Firestone High, after the street where the school is located. The school was named after Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest. Southern districts striving to become more "politically correct" have debated whether to strip Confederate leaders' names from schools and other buildings. The meeting is open to the public and will be televised live on Comcast Cable channel 24 and WCJT TV-7, which will also air a tape-delayed broadcast at midnight. |
