FHP Hosts Responder Safety Workshop

FHP Hosts Responder Safety Workshop

More than thirty police, fire, and transportation managers from a dozen agencies in Northeast Florida recently met at FHP’s Troop G Headquarters in Jacksonville to refine Traffic Incident Management (TIM) procedures.

FHP Troop Commander Major Grady Carrick leads one of several tabletop exercises with NFTPO Director Jeff Sheffield, FHP Captain Keith Gaston, and Nassau County Fire Chief Chuck Cooper.

FHP staff is working with the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization (NFTPO) and a national transportation consulting firm that offers extensive design, engineering, and planning services to federal, state, and local public and private clients to develop an operational guide to improve communication, response, and increase responder safety.

The proposed guide will include objectives for vehicle parking, use of lighting, traffic control, and incident command. A series of diagrams will be used to illustrate typical applications depicting suggested scene setups. Using aerial photography of local roadways and matchbox cars, scene applications are realistically modeled. A series of roll call type training modules will be developed to provide training to every responder in Northeast Florida.
