Baker County Wildcat fans got a treat for Halloween as their team handily defeated the Suwannee Bulldogs in Live Oak, Friday night.

The 54 to 21 district victory was another big step on the road back to the state playoffs for Head Coach Bobby Johns, who has amassed a 23 and 8 record since taking the helm of his alma

mater.

The Baker Boys left no doubt who was in charge from their first touch of the football. The Cats Harold Moore grabbed the opening kickoff and zoomed through the hapless Bulldog defenders for a 93 yard touchdown. Kendrick Sampson nailed his first of five successful extra point kicks to give Baker a lead that they never relinquished (7-0).

The swarming Wildcat defense forced four and out on the Bulldogs ensuing possession. Greg Williams didn’t waste any time in helping the Cats offense capitalize on their second touch of the ball. Following Suwannee’s punt, he took the hand off from quarterback Darvin Ruise and darted 34 yards for a second Wildcat touchdown.

It seemed like Cats fans were watching instant replay on the next series, with their defense dominating again and the offense scoring for the third time in less than four minutes of play. This time it was Hank Farmer's turn to plow his way 48 yards into the end zone, to put the Baker

The Bulldogs were finally able to muster some offense and put together a 84 yard scoring drive, that was aided by four Wildcat penalties including a personal foul and a pass interference call. The penalties were the only trick of the night for Coach Johns squad, which was flagged 12 times in the game.

On the scoring drive, Suwannee quarterback David Campbell burned the Cats with a couple of slant passes before calling his own number on a short play fake run across the goal line (7-21).

The teams traded possessions before Baker scored two unanswered touchdowns in the second quarter. The first came when Williams took the option pitch from Ruise and raced down the field for a 55 yard score (7-28).

Kendrick Sampson was in at quarterback for Baker late in the half, when he opted to keep the ball and battled his way into the end zone to put the Cats ahead 35 to 7 as the clock wound down.

Despite their 2 and 5 record, the traditional strong Suwannee team wasn’t going down without a fight. They came out of the locker room and scored on the second half’s opening possession with a sustained passing drive.

The Wildcats offense bogged down on their next drive and went four and out. But again their defense rallied to give them another opportunity. Framer made the most of the ensuing possession. The two way starter took the handoff and lumbered 76 yards down the field for another score (41 to14).

The Bulldogs responded with their own quick score, three plays later. Campbell connected with a receiver on a 70 yard catch and run pass play (21-41).

The Wildcats slammed the door on any hopes of a Suwannee rally, when they score on their next possession. Their trio of running backs pounded the ball right through the heart of the Bulldogs before Farmer capped the drive with an 11 yard run (47-21), for his third TD of the game.

Baker added one more when Tymeechee Givens scampered into the end zone from six yards out, in the fourth quarter (54-14).

The win improves the Wildcats overall record to 8 and 1, with their district record now 3 and 1.

The Cats have a bye on their schedule this upcoming week, before they travel to Jacksonville next week for their final regular season game against the Crusaders from Trinity Christian.
