Seminoles stave off Dolphins, 59-57
JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Senior Toney Douglas scored a team-high 16 points as Florida State held off a late charge to beat Jacksonville University 59-57 Saturday in both teams' season opener. Down 17 with 3:48 left in the game, things didn’t look to good for the JU men’s basketball team, but a frantic rally brought them within two points before time ran out.
"We fought hard the last four minutes, but we’ve got to play all 40 minutes like we did the last four," said JU head coach Cliff Warren. "This wasn’t all on our shooting. We’ve got to make stops and we didn’t play well on defense when we weren’t hitting shots."
Freshman Chris Singleton added a double-double, with 12 points and 16 rebounds for the Seminoles, who beat the Dolphins for the 15th consecutive time dating back to 1988. Jordan DeMercy contributed 10 points for Florida State (1-0).
Junior forward Lehmon Colbert led the Dolphins (0-1) with a game-high tying 16 points, hitting 5-of-10 from the floor. Marcus Allen added 10 points to become the 24th player in school history to score more than 1,000 points in their career.
FSU built a 30-17 halftime lead by holding the Dolphins to just six points in the final 13:20 of the first half.
Despite the scoring drought, the Dolphins pulled to within two points when Travis Cohn put back an offensive rebound with three seconds to play.
