OBITUARIES
Upon graduation from Auburn University, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. During his military career he was stationed at Ft. Oglethorpe, GA, Ft. McClellan, AL, Ft. McPherson, GA, Ft. Kamehameha, HI, Schenectady, NY, Sasebo and Beppu, Japan, Natick, MA, Taigu, Korea, Ft. Baker, CA and returned to Ft. McPherson where he retired as Lieutenant Colonel in 1941.After his military career, he went to work for the Department of Housing and Urban Development as a Financial Analyst and Assistant Chief of the Real Estate Disposition Branch, Atlanta, GA where he remained for an additional nineteen years. In 1984 the Fillmers moved to Fernandina Beach. Mr. Fillmer started the AARP Chapter and served as President. He was a member of the Retired Officer’s Association, U.S. Golf Association, American Legion and former President of the Fernandina Beach Men’s Golf Association. Mr. Fillmer was an avid woodworker, sports fan and collected eagles, which stemmed from his love of the Auburn Eagle. He loved the Atlanta Braves and Falcons; but quickly supported the Jacksonville Jaguars when the NFL expansion was announced. He will be sorely missed as the Patriarch of his family. Mr. Fillmer is preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Helen Miller Fillmer, who passed away in 2007. He leaves behind his daughter, Betsy Vance, currently of Fernandina Beach, his son, Mike Fillmer, Atlanta, GA, five grandchildren, Missy, Kimberley, Alan Todd, Chance, Michelle, five great grandchildren, his sister, Rosalyn Dresher (Jack), nieces, Beth and Lou Ann and nephews, Larry, Les, Don and Dave. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm, on Saturday in the Burgess Chapel with Chaplain Jim Tippins, officiating. Mr. Fillmer will be laid to rest beside his wife in Bosque Bello Cemetery with Full Military Honors. "Ed" Stuart, age 94, of Amelia Island, FL passed away on Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2008 at Baptist Medical Center – Nassau. A native of Passaic, New Jersey, he had resided in Philadelphia, PA and Atlanta, GA for many years. Mr. Stuart had worked for Crown, Cork & Seal of Philadelphia, PA.After working and overseeing the Atlanta, GA operation for many years, he retired as Vice President, in 1987. Being a part time resident of Amelia Island Plantation for a number of years; he and his wife became full time residents at the time of his retirement. He was a member of the Capital City Club of Atlanta, had served on the Board of Directors of Goodwill Industries of Atlanta and was Master Mason in Pasaic, NJ. He leaves behind, his wife of 19 years, Miriam Pickens Stuart, Amelia Island, FL and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Doris C. Whritenour, who passed away in June of 2007. Mr. Whritenour leaves behind, a daughter, Doris Glover (Albert), Fernandina Beach, FL, three sons, Richard A. Born in Lebanon, PA, she was the daughter of the late William A. and Hilda Seibert Hockley. In 1948, while visiting Tampa, FL she met her future husband, Jack D. Coker, whom she married in 1950. After residing in Tampa, FL and Savannah, GA for several years, they settled in Jacksonville in the late 1950s where her husband worked as the Regional Manager for Western Auto. Mrs. Coker was a Licensed Cosmetologist and had owned Beauty Salons in Lake City and Gainesville, FL. In 1967 the family moved to Fernandina Beach where her husband owned the local Western Auto Store and she owned and operated the "C" House, at the corner of 8th Street and Beech Street. Since settling on Amelia Island, she has been active with the Newcomers Club, the Amelia Island Ladies Association and the Amelia Island Art Association. Mrs. Coker was an accomplished artist, showing many of her watercolor paintings in local galleries. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Mr. Jack D. Coker. She leaves behind, their two sons, Jack D. Coker, Jr. (Susan), David D. Coker (Tanya), all of Fernandina Beach, a brother, Gordy Manderbach, of PA and six grandchildren, Mindy Black (Dave), Kyle Coker, Stephanie Lastinger, Dennis Davis, Ryan Coker and Cody Thompson. Funeral services were at 11:00 am on Saturday, at the Fernandina Beach Church of Christ with Cameron John, officiating. Mrs. Coker will be laid to rest beside her husband in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
