Jacksonville mayor asks residents to give a "Gift to the Community"
Asks residents to help support community
     JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 26, 2008-- Mayor John Peyton issued an urgent call to action for Jacksonville residents today. Standing inside the food storage facility at Second Harvest Food Bank of North Florida, Mayor Peyton used the shelves with dwindling supplies to illustrate his growing concern about increasing demand for assistance for services from area non-profits as reserves of cash, food, and supplies are decreasing.

Jacksonville University Launches Operation Smile Chapter
Chapter hosts first annual luncheon to benefit Operation Smile International
     Jacksonville, Fla. November 26, 2008 — Jacksonville University announces the launch of its Operation Smile Chapter, a student-run organization dedicated to help raise funds for Operation Smile International (OSI). The chapter held its first annual luncheon on November 21 in the Davis College of Business on campus and raised enough to cover a surgery for one child.

FHP increases enforcement for Thanksgiving travel period
     TALLAHASSEE/November 26, 2008 – The Thanksgiving holiday is a peak travel period for families joining together, but far too often the holiday celebration turns to tragedy because of failure to drive carefully and wear seatbelts. Since Thanksgiving always produces a high volume of traffic, the Florida Highway Patrol will increase its presence on Florida roadways during the upcoming five-day holiday period. All sworn personnel on the patrol normally assigned to administrative duties will be reassigned to patrol duties on high volume roadways. In addition, Auxiliary and Reserve troopers will volunteer to assist regular troopers during the heightened holiday enforcement period.

     NOVEMBER 25, 2008 - The Jaguars annual food distribution program, Operation Blessing, is a highly anticipated event held the Tuesday before Thanksgiving at A. Philip Randolph Park.      TALLAHASSEE— Governor Crist and Cabinet have approved the purchase of 54.74 acres of land adjacent to the Natural Bridge Historic State Park in Leon County. The acquired parcel is significant to the protection of a first magnitude spring and features a Civil War battlefield.

Motorcycle deaths rise
     Florida had 530 motorcycle fatalities in 2007, according to data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The state with the next highest number is California with 495 deaths. Texas placed third with 375 deaths, and Pennsylvania was fourth with 210, according to the NHTSA.
