December 1 Volunteer Opportunity ListingFlorida's Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program needs volunteers to join its corps of dedicated advocates who protect the rights of elders residing in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and adult family care homes. The program is comprised of 17 local councils throughout the state, and each council is seeking additional volunteers to identify, investigate and resolve residents' concerns. All interested individuals who care about protecting the health, safety, welfare and rights of long-term care facility residents who often have no one else to advocate for them are encouraged to call toll-free (888) 831-0404 or visit the program's web site at http://ombudsman.myflorida.com. Beach passes for saleAnnual vehicle passes for St. Johns County beaches are on sale at the preseason price of $30 for St. Johns County residents and $40 for others. Beginning March 2, prices increase by $10. The annual beach passes are available at the Recreation and Parks office on Mizell Road, the St. Augustine Beach Pier and all St. Johns County Tax Collector's Offices. A 2009 beach pass must be attached to the windshield of all cars driving on the public beaches of St. Johns County from March 1 through Labor Day. Holiday GardeningA Holiday Gardening Program will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Duval County Extension Office, 1010 N. McDuff Ave. Create a plant arrangement using material from your hard, learn how to care for traditional Christmas plants and find out what’s hot for gardening gifts.
