Board to get update on District restoration projects Board to get update on District restoration projectsPALATKA, Fla., Dec. 3, 2008 — The St. Johns River Water Management District’s Governing Board will hold a workshop on December 8 to discuss the protection and improvement of the St. Johns River’s water quality through restoration projects and land acquisition and management. More than $1.14 billion has been invested in projects to restore the St. Johns River since District operations began in 1973. Jeff Elledge, director of the District’s Department of Water Resources, will present an update to Board members on restoration efforts in the Upper St. Johns River Basin, Middle St. Johns River Basin, Upper Ocklawaha River Basin, Lower St. Johns River Basin, and the Indian River Lagoon. Robert Christianson, director of the District’s Department of Operations and Land Resources and the 2008 recipient of Audubon of Florida’s "Florida Special Places Award," will update the Board on the progress of the District’s land acquisition and land management programs since the 1970s. The workshop will take place from 9 a.m.–noon at the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, 9505 Ocean Shore Blvd., St. Augustine, located across from Marineland. Local government officials and members of the public are urged to attend. |
