Macclenny man involved in deadly shooting

Macclenny man involved in deadly shooting

On December 14, 2008 at 2112 hours, a patrol officer observed a blue Buick Lesabre driving with its lights off at Brooklyn Road and Xavier Street. The officer turned around to stop the vehicle. The vehicle ran a stop sign in an attempt to lose the officer.

The driver, Eugene Brown III, fled from officers driving very recklessly. He crashed into several police cars and deliberately drove into oncoming traffic in order to get away from police. A tactical maneuver was executed causing the suspect’s vehicle to crash and hit a light pole at the corner of Martin Luther King/Myrtle Avenue.

Officers approached the vehicle and noticed Brown, 16,  had been shot in the back of the head and was deceased. Officers stated they never heard a gunshot or fired their weapons.

It was determined that no officers fired their weapons and the shot had come from inside the vehicle. The only other person in the vehicle at the time of the crash was Telv D. Coleman, black male, 19 years old (Last known address was a PO Box in MacClenny Florida). Coleman was interviewed by detectives but gave no account of the incident stating he didn’t remember what happened. Coleman never stated police shot the victim. Coleman was arrested for giving several false names. In addition, it was learned that Coleman had an outstanding warrant for Home Invasion Robbery from Union County.

It should be noted that officers recognized the listed vehicle as the one that several assault rifles were taking from in June 2008.

At this time it is speculated that Coleman shot the victim in the head during the crash. Witnesses stated that they heard several gun shots (6 or more) coming from police. The victim’s father was allowed to view the vehicle and observe that there were no gunshot holes in the vehicle.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
