This poignant and brutal new comedy traces one woman’s attempt to regain her memory while surrounded by a curio-cabinet of alarmingly bizarre characters. The auditions will consist of cold readings, but familiarity with the play in advance would be much advised. This is a brutal comedy compiled with alarmingly bizarre characters! Absolutely hysterical!

Nuts

By Tom Topor
Amelia Community Theatre

Performance Dates: May15-30, 2009 Audition Dates: February, 2009
Director: Ron Kurtz Producer: Jane McAdams

This taut Broadway courtroom drama takes place in Bellevue Hospital in New York City. The play was created in the early 1980’s and was later made into a movie starring Barbra Streisand. A woman is fighting for her right to stand trial on manslaughter charges, rather than being declared mentally incompetent and committed to an institution.

Her past, which includes working as a prostitute, comes up in the testimony. There is some profanity, and challenging situations are dealt with in a direct manner. Performers need to be comfortable dealing with the language and the situation. It is nothing that isn’t explored on a daily basis in today’s media. All characters are on stage for most of the performance, being introduced in the beginning sequences of Act I. Characters share the stage and inter-act, but each has the opportunity to shine! Nine mature performers are needed.

Characters: (Some traditionally male roles may be cast with either male or female actors)

Officer Harry Haggerty: has served with the Court for many years.

Aaron Levinsky: Defense Lawyer (Some script references to his Jewish heritage):Old enough to be a law school graduate

Franklin MacMillan: experienced Prosecutor, from the district attorney’s office

The Recorder: has served with the Court for years

Rose Kirk: Claudia’s mother, twice married, obviously well off

Arthur Kirk: Claudia’s step-father, prosperous, self-made business man

Dr. Herbert Rosenthal: a psychiatrist of many years’ experience

Judge Murdoch: Experienced judge

Claudia Faith Draper: Described as " in her early 30’s, small, drawn, controlled"…She is the protagonist, the divorced child of Rose and Arthur whose struggles drive the action of the play. What a role for an actress who wants to soar!

The action takes place entirely in the courtroom, with contemporary dress. There will be many opportunities for creative volunteers to bring their special flair to this very special theatrical event!
